Shortcuts

I have a love-hate relationship with shortcuts.

Shortcuts can be a good thing, if it is the right thing, meaning it saves you time or money. Or both. But shortcuts can end poorly as well. Trust me. A little bit of wisdom goes a long way.

I think I have said this before, but my dog Jessie likes to roll in stinky things. Dead things. Whatever smells bad. Stuff that when I smell it I want to puke. And because we are often out with her in the wilds, and she is usually off leash, she is quite proficient at finding something to roll in. So, we have gotten pretty good at giving her a bath. We live in a townhouse with very large common grassy areas and… no fence. So, she is in the house with us most of the time which means she can’t stink. Are you smelling a problem? We cannot ignore her for a few hours or days until we have time to bath her. We have to act fast and decisively. I have over the years, however, tried various shortcut remedies to get us by, most of which have made the situation worse. Like the time I spritzed her with lavender essential oil. Guess what? She smelled just like a dead carp laying under a lavender bush. Bad idea. I think I wasted time and money on that one. A shortcut that wasn’t a shortcut after-all.

But please don’t focus on the rather obvious fact that if my dog was kept on a leash, we would have way less problems. As true as this is, it misses the point!

The point is that a great shortcut is worth a fortune when it works.

And…

Most shortcuts in nutrition and supplements are not really shortcuts. (Hint- except Standard Process)

Supplements are a huge industry and there is a bewildering variety of choices. Most of them worthless and in some cases, actually bad for you. Why do people spend money on supplements? They are looking for a short cut! Let’s face it, taking a supplement is way easier than changing the way we eat! And changing the way we eat forces us to change so many other areas of our lives. Things like who we hang out with. If our friends are always chewing on In/Out, then it is hard not to join in. Or how and when and where you shop usually changes too.  A lot goes into changing a habit as big as eating and I am not discouraging you from changing your diet whatever your goal is. Embracing a new habit like cleaning up your diet, is well worth it in the long run. But I am a realist.. And a human. I like a good shortcut!

One area where a shortcut would be in your best interest is in supplementing with Standard Process. Properly. Proper supplementation requires one to replace what is missing in the diet.

How do you know what is missing?

Are you eating wild caught fish several times a week? No? Then you are likely deficient in Omega 3 oils. Do you hurt all over? Do you ingest a large amount of vegetable oils, like canola and safflower oil? Then you need to counteract this influx of Omega 6 oil, the one that causes inflammation, which makes people hurt. Inflammation is abundant in people who have a low Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio. It is pretty safe to say that is most of us. Omega 3 fish oil is good for your brain, your heart, your immune system, your joints, you really can’t get enough of the benefits without a shortcut. Cod Liver Oil by Standard Process is a great shortcut.

Do you eat liver? No? Then you are probably deficient  in one or many B vitamins. Liver is truly a super-food. And B vitamins do all kinds of things related to your metabolism both carbohydrate and fat. They aid your nerves and heart as well. I could go on for a long time about B vitamins and why you need them. But if I have to eat liver to get them… Good time for a shortcut. And depending on your blood pressure, there are three great products from Standard Process where beef liver is the first ingredient. Cataplex Core B, Cataplex B2, and Drenamin at least one of which is always in my daily regime. Now I eat liver EVERYDAY! Take it or eat it! I’ll take it!!

If you speak to anyone over 75 and ask them if they grew up eating liver, at least 99% will say yes. Why? Because Everyone used to eat liver! Why did everyone use to eat liver? I don’t know for sure, but I suspect that generation was trained not to waste anything. And somewhere deep down, someone must have suspected that liver is unbelievably nutritious. They were very right. Liver is one of the true super-foods on this planet. Cow’s, rabbits, sheep, goose whatever, all have so much nutrition in them we are ignoring this vital food at the expense of our health.

Have you ever smelled cooking liver or tasted it? I almost would rather smell Jessie after she has rolled in dead carp! Time for a shortcut.

Just one more shortcut.

Magnesium is an incredibly hot topic right now. People are waking up to the fact that this humble nutrient is a rock star. But there is a lot of crummy magnesium being sold right now so let’s talk about getting your magnesium from a whole food source. And what is the best source on the planet? Buckwheat.

Now friends, buckwheat is not a grain or wheat, it is a seed. So Celiacs and gluten sensitive folks can enjoy it. This seed comes originally from the middle east but is now grown all over the world and conveniently on a farm in rural Wisconsin (The Standard Process Farm). In addition to a high concentration of magnesium, Buckwheat contains calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, fiber, protein, fats, and carbs. It has it all.

What does buckwheat, and by extension magnesium do? It is an incredible anti-inflammatory, it will help heal vascular tissue, it aids the immune system, it helps with blood sugar issues, and because it can cross the blood/brain barrier, you can think more clearly. I can’t say enough good things about magnesium. And I can’t say enough good things about buckwheat being the best natural source.

Now that I have sold you on the health benefits of buckwheat, couldn’t we just eat it. Yes. But you would have to eat a huge amount of it.

Give me the shortcut!

Buckwheat is used liberally in many of the Standard Process products. The most concentrated source of buckwheat can be found in two products, EZ Mag and Cyruta Plus. Either of these should be in everyone’s supplemental diet.

Folks remember Standard Process Products are like eating super high doses of real food. Because of this the body can break them down and use them quickly.

In other words, Standard Process is the world’s greatest shortcut!

If you want to be healthier there are really only two choices, take it or eat it.

In the above mentioned examples, I’m taking it.

Let’s talk about where a shortcut might work for you. Set-up an appointment today with Abbey or me, or both of us, and let’s get nature working for you.

Cheers,

ks

I loved the shortcut you took with Jessie...lavender to cover a smell...dead carp lying under a lavender bush...I'm still laughing.
