Chiropractic 103: It Ain't What It Seems

Join me for a little thought experiment.

Let’s say you have just landed on our little planet, in Roswell, New Mexico no doubt, and your first stop, after a corner gas station to relieve yourself, is a doctor’s office. You would watch as a person in a white coat, pokes, and prods, listens and provokes, maybe takes some blood out of a human’s arm. The Doctor then pulls out a notepad, scribbles, and hands the magic writing to the human. The person in the white coat, the doctor, leaves and then shortly after, so does the human.

And so do you.

You now follow the human to a big, oversized store where he stands in a line, and there’s another person in a white jacket standing guard in front of a dazzling array of pills and potions. The pills and potions are protected by what looks like bulletproof glass. Our human hands-over the magic scribbling from the doctor and the person in the white coat produces a small brownish bottle with little magic pills inside.

You, as a first-time visitor to earth, first seeing a doctor’s office and now Walmart, are very intrigued.

What is happening? Let’s continue.

Our human, now in possession of the magic pills, reads the label, opens the top of the brownish bottle with great childproof difficulty, and places two white colored objects in his hand. He puts them in his mouth and heads for a drinking fountain where he drinks and swallows the white objects.

“Aha!”, thinks you, “I get it!” There is something wrong with this human’s mouth! Doctor, examination, magic writing, magic pills in the mouth, equals problem with the mouth! Humans are very clever, you surmise. But why do so many people have problems with their mouths you ask yourself.

But wait! You really DON’T understand what is happening. You assume, innocently, something in the mouth equals problems with the mouth. Wrong.

We all know from this common scenario that what we put in our mouths has systemic effects. Pills or food or toxins or whatever. The body guides and directs the pills to the proper location and produces the desired effect whether it is lowering blood sugar or raising up the thyroid hormones. It has nothing to do with the mouth.

The mouth is a portal to the rest of the body systems. Pretty obvious. Right?

Why am I talking about the mouth? And aliens like you?

Because a similar misunderstanding happens every day in our chiropractic office. Most folks initially assume that since we are touching their spine, we are obviously treating their backs.

It is true, most folks that come into our office, originally come with the erroneous idea that we are treating their back pain. As much as I hate to say it, this is false. As real as their back pain may be, they came in with a false sense of what we are doing with chiropractic care.

So, what are we doing?

We are removing nervous system interference so that the body can function better. Very unglamorous. Very unsexy. But very powerful and necessary.

The truth is, the spine, like the mouth, is merely a portal to access the rest of the body and all its systems. That’s right. The spine is an access point. Everything that happens in your body is initiated in the nervous system. And your spinal cord, housed inside 24 moveable vertebrae and connected directly to your brain, controls and coordinates everything that happens in the human body. If we access the nervous system through the spine, we can affect all the other body systems. Just like a pill entering the body through the mouth, a spinal adjustment has an effect on a particular body system or function. Each of the 24 vertebral segments allows access to body systems and processes. For instance, the area between your shoulder blades, has nerves that run to the heart and lungs. If we increase or sometimes decrease the amount of nerve impulse, with the activator, we can influence how the heart and lungs function. Pretty sweet! This goes for the liver, pancreas, spleen, you name it.

So, saying that chiropractic is about back doctoring is like saying medical visits are for your mouth.

Don’t make the mistake of limiting what chiropractic can do for you. There are a ton of benefits, with or without the back pain.

And the results are out of this world. (Pun intended)

Cheers,

ks

Oh my gosh, not only does my chiropractor (i.e. YOU) help me feel better, live better, and walk taller; BUT, you keep me laughing which in and of itself is a huge health benefit. Thank you for teaching me about what it is that you really do. Now I'll stop looking at you like you have two heads.

Question. Does this mean your mid shoulder blade pain may be from something caused in the heart or lungs?
