What’s Not Working?
Great video, click here!
If you have ever been in our office when we are adjusting an infant, you have probably asked yourself, “Do little kids have back problems? Why would a kid need to be adjusted?” Both good questions. But the answer is very simple!
Because they have a nervous system! And the nervous system controls and coordinates everything that happens in your body. And in mine too.
“So, you may say, of course kids have a nervous system. But what does that have to do with back pain? Do kids really get back pain? When my back hurts I go to the chiropractor.“
Simply put, I don’t know if kids get back pains. But luckily for them we are not concerned with back pain. We, as chiropractors, are concerned with the nervous system, no matter how old or young. If you have a nervous system, we can help you, independent of the pain. Because not all problems are painful.
If it sounds to you like we are working on something imaginary, because it is not painful, then you would be wrong! How can we help problems that are not painful? By clearing out the interference of the nervous system.
Nervous systems accumulate garbage just like your garage. Stuff gets stored in there that you don’t even know you have. Consider the fact that our nervous system never forgets anything. Little kids are no different. They fall, they crash, they accumulate just like all of us. Usually more. But infants? They just lay there, right?
Wrong. Because their little nervous systems are learning to control and coordinate everything inside of them. So if they can’t poop, maybe the nervous system needs some encouragement. If they refuse to latch onto mom, maybe we can help relax their system, usually the neck, and encourage this behavior. Not sleeping? Same thing, adjust the nervous system. Ear infections? You get the idea.
Do kids need to be adjusted? Yes more than they need drugs or pills. Their systems can get bogged down just from the stress of passing through the birth canal! And then we cram them into car seats that are not fit for human consumption. We usually vaccinate the heck out of them too. Again, you get the idea. All of these are stressors that accumulate in kids and can cause problems. Problems that are not painful… just dysfunctional.
Does this apply to grown ups? Or is chiropractic only for back pain when you get older? (I’m obviously baiting you) If this is how you have approached chiropractic, you are missing 90% of the picture.
Again…
The easiest way to understand chiropractic is, so it seems, through kids. Kids don’t typically have the capacity or vocabulary to describe what they are feeling. We have to go by their behavior. We have to watch what they are doing and then infer what needs to be done. Parents can, and usually do, tell us that something in the kid’s world is not working. He is not pooping. He is not latching on. He is not sleeping. We can then assess the areas of the nervous system that control that bodily function, make an adjustment, and let the body go to work.
What in your world is not working? Are you sleeping and pooping? These two things tell us a ton about your health status and what needs to be done. Adults are more complicated and have accumulated more garbage and have endured more stress and insults, both bodily and emotionally causing body systems to malfunction. Adults need to have their nervous system cleaned up regularly and repeatedly. Not just when the back hurts.
To close, the handsome little fellow you see at the top of the page and in the video wasn’t pooping. We worked with him for a few weeks getting his system working correctly. On the day this pic was taken, he had already pooped 6 times. His mother told me to back off! He is not out of the weeds, but his systems are starting to wake up and coordinate.
Folks expand your definition of chiropractic and ask yourself, “What is not working in my world?” Stop using pain as a reliable gauge of your health. Use function instead. Call us, we are here to help.
